MEXICO CITY, Oct. 5 - Federal prosecutors in New York announced
Wednesday that a "Mexican cocaine kingpin" had been arrested, and
said that he had been accused of transporting 10,000 pounds of
cocaine, worth $90 million, into the United States in the last year.
They said the man, Agustín Haro Rodríguez, was arrested while trying
to enter Arizona from Mexico on Sunday on charges of drug
trafficking and money laundering. An indictment said he had been
responsible for distributing up to 500 pounds of cocaine monthly and
had smuggled it across the border in trucks. Seventeen people
accused of being accomplices were also in custody.

"The threat of extradition to the United States has altered the way
in which Colombian traffickers operate, with many of the largest
organizations now withdrawing from the trade after transporting
cocaine to Mexico," said Richard S. Sullivan, former chief of the
International Narcotics Trafficking Unit in the Manhattan United
States Attorney's Office. He said Mexican groups had "assumed
greater control of the narcotics and money laundering trade on both
sides" of the border.
