ITALY: WOMEN PLAN ARAB DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
Rome, 19 Oct. (AKI) - An Arab documentary festival, a Mediterranean
mayors' conference, and a series of seminars on family law are among
forthcoming initiatives being planned by the Italian Arab Women's
Association (AIWA - 'Yes' in Arabic). AIWA, whose mission is to foster
peace, solidarity and cultural exchange between women in Italy and in
the Arab world, will on Thursday unveil its programme of activities
for 2005-2006 at the Italian foreign ministry in Rome.
AIWA, was founded in Florence in 2002, on the principle that women
have the same fundamental role in all societies. It is in contact with
such countries as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Lebanon, and has already
organised a number of joint projects and initiatives.
In March 2005, together with Italy's foreign under-secretary
Margherita Boniver, AIWA signed an an appeal for kidnapped Italian
journalist Giuliana Sgrena's release in Iraq. In December, 2004, it
organised a conference held at Rome's mosque, 'Women's role in the
Koran'.
Earlier initiatives included a concert by the distinguished Lebanese
Classical Arabic singer and actor, Jahida Wehbe, to raise funds for a
children's hospital in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya.
