Burma convinced U.S. might invade from Bangladesh

The military junta in Burma fears the United States is preparing an
attack on the Southeast Asian dictatorship, according to a report from
the region.

The fears are believed to be one reason the junta recently relocated
the capital from Rangoon to Pyinmana.

The Narinjara News reported from Bangladesh that the Burmese junta is
gathering intelligence on U.S. military activities in Bangladesh from
informers working for the Burmese Army in Bangladesh, according to a
businessman close to a Burmese informer.

"The junta strongly believes that U.S. forces may possibly attack and
invade Burma from Bangladesh territory during the next year if the
military junta fails to reform the Burmese political system in 2006,"
said a teacher from Maungdaw who is close to high ranking Burmese army
officials.
According to the report, Bangladesh has leased St. Marin Island, at
the mouth of the Naff River, to the U.S. Navy and Army. A U.S. base is
being built on the island.
The Dhaka-based Narinjara is an Internet site set up in September 2001
by Arakanese democratic activists in exile to monitor Arakan State in
Burma.
