Syria replaces security chief who allegedly committed suicide

Syrian President Bashar Assad has replaced his interior minister as
part of a cabinet reshuffle in the face of increasing international
pressure.
On Feb. 11 Assad appointed Bassam Abdul Majid, a career security
officer, as interior minister.

Abdul Majid replaced Maj. Gen. Ghazi Kanaan, who reportedly committed
suicide in 2005. Kanaan, who for years headed Syrian military
intelligence in Lebanon, had reportedly joined the opposition to Assad.
Syria increased security measures in Damascus during a United Nations
effort to prosecute aides to Assad on charges of planning the
assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Up to eight senior Syrian security officials could undergo prosecution
by the International Criminal Court.

Assad also replaced his longtime foreign minister, Farouk A-Shaara.
A-Shaara's successor was Walid Mualem, former Syrian ambassador to the
United States.

A-Shaara, foreign minister since 1984, was appointed vice president. A
government statement said A-Shaara, who replaces the exiled Abdul
Halim Khaddam, would continue to be involved in foreign policy.
"Mr. A-Shaara will be responsible for executing foreign and media
policy under the directions of the president," the official Syrian
government news agency SANA said.
