'Targets' film a joke: terror accused

>From correspondents in London
August 23, 2006

AN Iraqi Muslim on trial in Britain for an alleged terrorism offence made a
film of British landmarks, which prosecutors claim was a guide for
terrorists, as a joke, a court has been told, The Times reported.

Minicab driver Rauf Mohammed, 26, denies a single charge that between
January 1, 2003 and January 27, 2005 he made a video which would be "likely"
to be useful to someone committing or preparing an act of terrorism.
Maz Ibrahim, a 25-year-old British Sudanese, gave evidence for the defence
and said he was the unseen man holding the camcorder, it was reported in an
early edition of The Times newspaper today.
Mr Ibrahim told the court that the film, which was made around September
2003, was nothing more than a tourist video for relatives overseas and that
the terrorism discussion heard in the background of the video was just the
pair's sense of humour at work.
It has been alleged that Mohammed toured London listening to hypnotic music
about martyrdom and spoke of killing Western leaders, including British
Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W. Bush.
The film footage contained a speech by Osama bin Laden and "zoomed in" shots
of Paddington Green police station, in west London, where most people
arrested under anti-terrorism legislation are taken for questioning.
Other high-profile alleged targets included the Houses of Parliament and the
London Eye giant Ferris wheel as well as luxury hotels on upmarket Park
Lane.
When asked about the level of zoom on some of the video, Ibrahim said it was
because "I just like details of things".
Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London previously heard that a British
Home Office document assessed Mohammed as having been active in support of
the Iraqi insurgency on his return, and said that he remained in contact
with a number of people who were similarly involved, it was alleged.
Under cross-examination, Mohammed, from Forest Gate, east London, said the
British authorities had not explained the allegations nor provided him with
any details of the alleged activities or contacts.
During Tuesday's proceedings, Mr Ibrahim also admitted to the court that he
was an admirer of the Tablighi Jamaat Islamic movement, saying he had been
present at the beginning of some of their lectures which began as he
finished praying at his mosque.
He denied, however, that the organisation had fundamentalist views.
The case continues.
