TURKEY: TOP MP SAYS RELATIONS WITH ITALY STILL BLOSSOMING <javascript:aumenta();> <javascript:diminuisci();> Ankara, 1 Sept. (AKI) - The head of the Turkish parliament's foreign affairs commission, Mehmet Dulger, has welcomed a letter sent by Italy's foreign minister to his Turkish counterpart expressing solidarity with Turkey over recent terrorist attacks and thanking Turkey for its role in Lebanon. "I see this letter as a positive improvement in Turkey-Italy relationshis. The close cooperation between the two countries during [former Italian premier Silvio] Berlusconi's period seems to continue on the same path with [new Italian premier Romano] Prodi's period, Dulger said. Turkey's foreign minister Abdullah Gul could answer as early as Friday to a letter sent by his Italian counterpart Massimo D'Alema on Tuesday in which he expressed Italy's solidarity and condolences for the recent terror attacks in southern Turkey in which three people died and "deep appreciation" for the government's decision to participate in the UN-backed peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, government sources in Ankara told Adnkronos International (AKI). "I can say there are many parallelisms with the policies of Italy and the policies of Turkey on the crisis in Lebanon. So it is obvious that the foreign ministers meet and discuss joint policies on the Middle East," Dulger said, referring to D'Alema's proposal to meet Gul soon, which the letter contains. "The relationship between Italy and Turkey has evolved into the level of 'state politics' compared to the unstable level of 'government politics'. What I mean by that is that when governments change it doesn't affect the relationship between countries. It continues on a positive path. Italy will provide, with France, the core of Europe's contribution to the UN force in Lebanon. Under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 adopted earlier this month, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is to swell from its current 1,990-strong force to a maximum 15,000 international troops. Turkey has also pledged troops, but the contingent's deployment still needs to be approved.
