Iraq Sunni clerics to boycott reconciliation talks

BAGHDAD (AFP) -
Iraq's leading Sunni clerics' organization will boycott a national
reconciliation conference called by Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki
to end sectarian bloodletting, it has said.

The Muslim Scholars' Association said it had not received an invitation
to the meeting, which is to be held on December 16.

"The association will not participate in the reconciliation conference
as proposed by the government," said Sheikh Mohammed Bashar al-Faidhi,
spokesman of the association, arguing that previous talks had failed.

"We have seen in the past more than once that the government signs some
agreements and later goes back on it," he told AFP Saturday, referring
to a peace conference in Cairo last year.

"In any case, we have not been invited to the conference," he added.

The head of the association, Sheikh Hareth al-Dhari, is currently
outside Iraq. The government has opened a criminal investigation against
him for allegedly inciting sectarian violence against Iraq's Shiite
majority.

The conference was first due to take place in early 2006 but had been
postponed due to an upsurge in the violence plaguing Iraq. On Friday,
officials announced it would take place next week.

Iraq's warring Shiite and Sunni communities are locked in brutal
tit-for-tat sectarian violence that has left thousands dead since
February when a revered Shiite shrine was bombed by Sunni militants.
