FBI probes threat against Muslim leader

SACRAMENTO: The FBI said that it is investigating a death threat sent to
the leader of a local Muslim group after US Sen. Barbara Boxer rescinded
a certificate her office had awarded to him. Special Agent Karen Ernst
said Friday the bureau launched an investigation after Basim Elkarra
reported receiving a threatening e-mail. Elkarra, executive director of
the Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations,
received a certificate of accomplishment from Boxer's office in November
recognising his "outstanding service." Elkarra said the award reflected
his group's efforts to establish good relations with Christians, Jews,
minority groups and the FBI. After the certificate was awarded, Boxer
read a Web log linking her to the council and accusing it of
pro-terrorist activities, including refusing to condemn Osama bin Laden
by name.

Two die in wind storm

LOS ANGELES: A major wind storm has blacked out thousands of customers,
boosted the danger of wildfires and whipped up a dust storm linked to
two deaths. Strong Santa Ana wind is customary in Southern California
in December and February, but this storm, which was continuing Saturday,
is one of the fiercest in years, meteorologists said. Gusts to 62 mph
were reported late Friday in the Malibu hills, and wind was measured at
more than 80 mph in some mountain passes. The National Weather Service
declared a red flag warning for fire danger because of the wind and the
Los Angeles County Fire Department stationed 100 additional firefighters
in vulnerable areas.

Family of convict beg jury

HOUSTON: The father of the truck driver convicted in the United States'
deadliest human smuggling attempt pleaded for his son's life Friday,
asking jurors to show mercy instead of choosing the death penalty for
the man he still remembers as "a loving kid." "I know the pain (the
victims' families) are going through. I feel that pain. I'm asking for
mercy," said Tyrone Williams Sr., whose son Tyrone Williams was
convicted last month for his role in the deaths of 19 illegal
immigrants. He was the latest of several relatives to testify in the
punishment phase of the retrial of the younger Williams - including his
mother the day before. Tyrone Williams Sr., a 62-year-old factory worker
in Massachusetts, said he taught his son discipline and the value of
education.

Congressmen to restore US image

WASHINGTON: The new chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said
Friday that the United States has suffered a severe loss in prestige
abroad in recent years, and a primary goal of his term will be to
restore it. Rep. Tom Lantos, chosen to head the committee by his
Democratic colleagues after their takeover of the House of
Representatives, said in a statement that he will do that by improving
international cooperation and "reinstating the United States' role as
the lodestar of democratic values and human rights." Lantos has been the
committee's senior minority member for six years.

Utah moose to cure population

HUNTSVILLE: It was a rough day to be a moose. They were stalked by
helicopter, captured with a net, blindfolded and then airlifted to
trailers for a six-hour drive. "I equate this to alien abduction. It's
got to be that traumatic," said Dean Riggs, area wildlife manager with
the Colorado Wildlife Division. Wildlife officers hope to catch 25 moose
through Saturday in northern Utah and transplant them to western
Colorado. The strategy helps Utah cure a moose overpopulation while
raising the number in Colorado. In return, Utah will get big horn sheep.
