Military Intel Chief says Syria has lowered war readiness

Israel's Military Intelligence Chief, Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin, told the
Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday that Syria is
lowering its readiness for war after the military tightened its security on
the Syrian-Israel border.

Yadlin also said Israel is uncertain of Syrian President Bashar Assad's
desire for peace with Israel, but it is clear he wants to open up
negotiations with Israel in order to receive legitimacy in the world.

Concerning Hizballah, he said the organization has become stronger and has
succeeded in replenishing its rocket reserves almost to the level it was
before the war. He expressed discontent of UNIFIL forces failing to prevent
the continuous smuggling of weapons from Iran and Syria into Lebanon.
Hizballah members are working to extend the border with Israel, dressed as
civilians, so they will not be exposed or confronted by UNIFIL forces.

Concerning Hamas, Yadlin said Hamas is strengthening its efforts to transmit
funds and ammunition into the Gaza Strip and improve its rocket
capabilities, following the Lebanese model.
