Israeli Military Court Frees Deported Imam By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: January 24, 2007 An Israeli military court has ordered the release of the deported former imam of Ohio's largest mosque, but he will remain in custody for at least two more days, his lawyer said. A military judge ruled that there was not enough evidence to hold the imam, Fawaz Damra, who was arrested by Israeli authorities two and a half weeks ago after being deported from the United States, said his lawyer, Smadar Ben-Natan. She said Mr. Damra would be held until tomorrow pending a possible appeal by the prosecution. Mr. Damra, 46, a Palestinian from the West Bank who served as imam at the Islamic Center of Cleveland, was deported because of his ties to Islamic Jihad, a militant Palestinian group that has been classified by Israel and the United States as a terrorist organization. +++ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
