Most serious attack against Western targets in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD • A suspected Islamist suicide bombing outside the Marriott 
Hotel in Islamabad yesterday was the most serious attack on a Western 
target in Pakistan in almost 10 months.

Here is a chronology of attacks on Christians and Westerners since 
September 11, 2001, after which President Pervez Musharraf backed the 
United States-led “war on terror”.

2001

October 28: Gunmen kill 16 worshippers and Muslim policeman at Catholic 
church in Bahawalpur.

2002

January 23: Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl abducted and 
murdered by Islamic militants in Karachi.

March 17: Attacker hurls grenades at the Protestant Church in 
Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave, killing five including a US diplomat’s 
wife and stepdaughter.

May 8: Suicide car-bomb attack on a bus outside the Karachi Sheraton 
kills 11 French naval engineers and three Pakistanis.

June 14: Suicide car-bomb outside US consulate in Karachi kills 12 
Pakistanis.

July 13: Grenades thrown at European tourists in northern town of 
Mansehra wound 12 including seven Germans.

August 5: Gunmen kill six Pakistani guards at Murree Christian School 
northeast of Islamabad.

August 9: Attackers hurl grenades at Christian Hospital chapel in 
Taxila, near Islamabad. Four Pakistani nurses and an attacker are killed.

September 25: Gunmen kill seven workers at Karachi office of a Christian 
charity.

December 5: Three Pakistanis killed at honorary Macedonian consulate in 
Karachi.

December 25: Two men throw grenade into a church during Christmas 
service in Chuyyanwali village in central Pakistan, killing three girls.

2003

Feb 28: Gunman kills three guards at police post next to US consulate in 
Karachi.

2004

Jan 15: Grenades are hurled at Bible Society library in Karachi and car 
bomb explodes 20 minutes later injuring 13 people, mainly police.

May 26: Two bomb blasts outside US consul-general’s home and the 
Pakistan American Cultural Center kill police guard and injure 32 police 
and local journalists.

Oct 28: Seven people wounded including a US diplomat in a blast at the 
Islamabad Marriott.

2005

Sept 9: Eight people wounded in twin bomb blasts at KFC and McDonald’s 
restaurants in Karachi.

Nov 15: Car bomb outside KFC in Karachi kills three people.

2006

Feb: Protesters angry over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) 
attack McDonald’s and Pizza Hut restaurants and the Holiday Inn hotel in 
Lahore and the KFC in Peshawar.

March 2: Suspected Al-Qaeda-linked suicide car bomber kills US diplomat 
and four others outside US Consulate in Karachi on the eve of President 
George W. Bush’s visit to Islamabad.

2007

Jan 26: A suicide bomber blows himself up outside the Marriott Hotel in 
Islamabad, killing a guard.
