Senator: Islam does not support terrorism Juhel Browne [EMAIL PROTECTED] Friday, June 8th 2007 <http://www.trinidadexpress.com/images/pix.gif> <http://www.trinidadexpress.com/images/pix.gif> Opposition Senator Raziah Ahmed, a practising Muslim, has condemned all acts of terrorism, particularly those carried out by anyone making references to Islam. "The perpetrators of terrorism in all forms are due for punishment," Ahmed said on Tuesday night, during a late Senate sitting at the Red House, Port of Spain, as it debated the Police Service (Amendment) Bill. She did so in response to statements made by National Security Minister Martin Joseph about the capture in Trinidad over the weekend of two of the four suspects in an alleged terror plot against the JFK International Airport in New York. All four suspects, Guyanese Russell Defreitas, Abdul Kadir, Abdel Nur and Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahiim-who have all since been arrested-are described in US court documents as having some form of Islamic beliefs. "I would just like to take one tiny moment to particularly condemn all conspiracies and all plots by peons that are designed to inflict terror and fear in the lives of all citizens," Ahmed said. "Such actions are contrary to the tenets of Islam and the perpetrators of such acts are woefully misguided if they wish to use Islam as a proponent for their deeds." Just hours earlier, Attorney General John Jeremie had said in an interview on the alleged plot against JFK Airport that there is nothing to suggest that all Muslims in Trinidad and Tobago are associated with terrorism. Jeremie said there was a danger that some people would wrongfully identify an entire group of people as being terrorists. "You identify Islamic persons in Trinidad as being terrorists or you identify Trinidad with terrorism. Nothing could be further from the truth," he said.
