U.N. Compares Pregnancy to Slavery GrassTopsUSA Commentary By Sydney Whitmyer 12-20-07 There once was a time when having children was considered a blessing. Now, instead of being considered a blessing, pregnancy supposedly makes women slaves. At a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) lecture, the president of the Pan-African Parliament and former top U.N. official, Dr. Gertrude Mongella, supported and praised UNFPA's extremely controversial promotion of reproductive rights, a.k.a. abortion and contraception, as a way to reduce the tragedy of maternal mortality even after admitting that the policy has failed to help women. According to the website www.cfam.org <http://www.cfam.org/> , the number of women dying from maternal causes in Africa was the same between 1990 an 2005, and in some parts of Africa , the maternal mortality rate continues to rise. The fact that these figures exist is interesting because the World Heath Organization (WHO) stated recently that virtually no data exists to make such a claim since most developing countries do not report the cause of death or the sex of the deceased. I find it rather humorous that Dr. Mongella took the time to point fingers, considering UNFPA's failure to reduce maternal deaths. Mongella actually blamed the failure to reduce maternal mortality on a lack of national support, commitment, male involvement and finally -- the kicker -- the low status of women and women's lack of decision-making power. However, it is not surprising that Mongella would hold such an opinion, when one considers that according to some liberals, before the UNFPA had promoted reproductive rights, "reproduction was some kind of enslavement" that "chained" women. One of these days, a big-time feminist is going to have to explain to me how pregnancy is like being enslaved because obviously I don't see it. If we are going to call anyone slaves here, I would point out that those women who abort their babies and use birth control are the slaves, not the women who choose life Freedom, according to feminists, is most certainly does not free one from all entanglements or consequences, family, morality, etc. Nor is liberation a freeing of oneself from any type of situation that seems oppressive. Man, meaning men and women, does not have a limitless series of rights. In fact, one might say that having children frees, rather than constricts the individual because it allows one to give more of oneself. At the same time, it should be pointed out that one solution in regards to reducing maternal mortality would be for men and women to wait until they are married to have sex. It's quite simple, control yourself! Get a hold on your desires. There is a very good and beautiful reason why sex is referred to as the martial act. One does not engage in the marital act for pure pleasure alone. It has two ends: It is unitive and procreative. The act is lustful and objectifying when the good of another is not sought, or when a woman decides to use contraception. Not only is the woman enslaving herself to her desires, she is enslaving herself to the man who will see her as an object to fulfill his desire. Procreation is the most profound blessing that can be bestowed upon a couple. This is why the idea of having "unwanted" or "inconvenient" children, or the notion that pregnancy=slavery, is evidence of a deep-rooted selfishness. It treats both members of the union as objects of desire and also views the child as an object; or as just a biological growth which may be cut out or manipulated. It seems that the common practices of abortion and birth control are increasing due to a mixed-up understanding of dignity, with a focus on man's animal instinct. Why should women and girls be given birth control for the purpose of controlling births, rather than being told to control their sexual urges. Unless society can address the issue of human sexuality with a selfless attitude, it will be difficult to preserve our society and the dignity of human beings. The socially accepted form of murder we call abortion must cease if we are to preserve the integrity of our population and the moral well-being of our society. Dr. Mongella is right, the solution is to make sure that women are not oppressed, and that freedom from oppression needs to begin by making abortions and contraception illegal, as well as educate men and women about the true and beautiful meaning of sexuality. Sydney Whitmyer, a senior at Christendom College and a Theology major, is planning on continuing her studies after graduation by pursuing a degree in the medical field (and hopefully one day marrying the current love of her life, Sean). She is working on a book concerning John Paul II's Theology of the Body, with the hope of waking up the modern world and reminding people of just how beautiful life truly is and of man's purpose. She loves her family very deeply, but about all she loves: the Catholic Church, Jesus Christ and the Blessed Mother.
