(AFP) 31 July 2008 BAQUBA, Iraq - Iraqi forces backed by US troops arrested another 14 suspects on Thursday during a major military sweep aimed at breaking up the Al Qaeda network in the restive province of Diyala. Among those detained in the northeastern province's Mandali district were five fighters described as 'important members' of the Al Qaeda network in Iraq, military officials told AFP. The offensive which involves about 50,000 Iraqi police and soldiers, with logistical support from US troops, is currently mainly focused on the provincial capital of Baquba, 60 kilometres (35 miles) north of Baghdad. The operation, which began on Tuesday and involves curfews and neighbourhood searches across Diyala for militiamen and illegal weapons, has netted dozens of suspected militants. Iraq soldiers arrested 45 wanted suspects across the province on Wednesday and also liberated six people kidnapped held by militants, officials said. Another 13 people believed to be linked to insurgents were also detained. However, Iraqi officials said a 24-hour traffic curfew inside the sprawling urban area of Baquba would be scaled back, targeting only specific neighbourhoods. 'There will be a curfew in the neighbourhoods where we will carry out raids,' General Ali Gedan, director of military operations in Diyala, told AFP. Diyala, which has a long border with Iran, has been a centre of weapon smuggling, and has suffered repeated suicide bombings, thought to be mostly orchestrated by Sunni Muslim Al Qaeda operatives. In the past few months the region has seen repeated effort by the US and Iraqi militaries to drive out insurgents.
