Sources said smugglers were illegally transporting 20 to 40 truckloads of urea everyday to Afghanistan through the agency's different routes allegedly with the connivance of the concerned high-ups. Prices of a urea bag have gone up from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 in different parts of the agency and this sudden increase in prices is worrying tribal farmers who demanded of the government to take serious notice of urea smuggling on a massive scale into Afghanistan. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/urea Go to homepage. urea Pronunciation: \yu̇-ˈrē-ə\ Function: noun Etymology: New Latin, from French urée, from urine Date: 1806 : a soluble weakly basic nitrogenous compound CO(NH2)2 that is the chief solid component of mammalian urine and an end product of protein decomposition, is synthesized from carbon dioxide and ammonia, and is used especially in synthesis (as of resins and plastics) and in fertilizers and animal rations http://www.espionageinfo.com/Vo-Z/World-Trade-Center-1993-Terrorist-Attack.html The attack and its aftermath. At 12:18 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 1993, an explosion rocked the second level of the parking basement beneath Trade Tower One. The explosive material, as investigators would later determine, was somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 pounds (544–680 kg) of urea nitrate, a homemade fertilizer-based explosive. The blast ripped open a crater 150 feet (46 m) in diameter and five floors deep, rupturing sewer and water mains and cutting off electricity. Over the hours that followed, more than 50,000 people were evacuated from the Trade Center complex. A stunned nation soon grasped a fact larger than the incident itself: foreign-sponsored terrorism—which had long plagued Western Europe and parts of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia—had come to the United States. http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/jul/25beng6.htm Rediff India Abroad Ammonium nitrate, urea used in Bengaluru blasts Vicky Nanjappa in Bengaluru | July 25, 2008 19:37 IST Nine explosions in one single day leaving two dead and six injured. Bengaluru on Friday was placed very high on the terror map. Even as police dig deep to find out who is behind this attack, Intelligence Bureau sources say that it could be the handiwork of the Students Islamic Movement of India and Harakat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami. Although it was being claimed by the police initially that gelatin sticks were used, it has now become clear that the bombs were triggered off by using ammonium nitrate and urea. Both these substances, which are commonly used as fertilizers, were packed with nuts and bolts and then attached to a timer device. The police had initially claimed that a mobile phone was used to trigger off the explosion, but until now they have not managed to retrieve a single mobile phone. Forensic experts told rediff.com that at present it seems as though the timer device triggered off all the nine bombs in Bengaluru on Friday. Experts say that normally pellets are packed along with the two substances so that when the explosion takes place maximum damage is caused. However in Friday's attack ammonium [nitrate] and urea were packaged along with nuts and bolts, which goes on to show that the intention was to ensure that the blasts were of low intensity, a forensic science expert also said. Although it is not a typical trait of both the SIMI or the HuJI, the IB feels that this could well be a new pattern. Immediately after the Hyderabad twin blasts, when the police realised that Neogel-90 was used, they thought that it may not be an act of terror as these outfits usually carried out blasts using RDX. However further investigations showed that Neogel-90 was purchased by terrorists thanks to its easy availability. The use of Neogel-90 was once again found during the Jaipur blasts, which killed over 60 persons. IB sources say that the main intention behind the Bengaluru blasts was to cause a scare and hence deliberately there was no use of Neogel-90 as there was no intention to cause large scale damage to life or property. http://webdiary.com.au/cms/?q=node/967/print Terror laws will damage public trust, ferment civil disorder: Aussie funds manager By Margo Kingston Created 15/11/2005 - 04:11 * * * Indirectly providing funds that facilitate a terrorist activity As a fund manager we invest money in businesses which we do not control (and where we cannot influence management policies). The Bill makes it very difficult to ascertain what we can legitimately invest in. For example: We might invest in a urea (nitrogen fertiliser) plant. As urea can be used in explosives, most governments place regulatory controls on access to the product. There remains, however, a risk that urea finds its way into terrorist hands. Does this rule make investing in urea production illegal even when we check that controls are in place to ensure that access to urea is restricted? Would we be justified if ex-post it turned out that the company could not account for several tons of fertiliser and that fertiliser had been used in terrorism? A urea plant is an obvious candidate for specific attention. However, the wording of the Bill is very broad. It only requires that the funds provided can facilitate a terrorist act. Mobile phones have played an integral part in terrorist acts. Surely the drafting, as proposed, does not wish to impose upon us a restriction regarding investing in telephone companies? http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=0022cR http://www.nypostonline.com/news/19914.htm [Original link – no longer active] Feds Pray Border Bust Has Derailed Y2k Bomb Attack By Niles Lathem The feds have unearthed a possible terror plot for a New Year's Eve bombing at Seattle's famed Space Needle, where tens of thousands are expected to ring in the millennium. U.S. Customs and Immigration agents discovered the nightmare plan with the arrest this week of a French-speaking Algerian trying to enter the country from Canada in a car packed with explosive materials. The man identified himself as Canadian citizen Benni Norris. Authorities determined his real name is Ahmed Ressam, 32, an Algerian. They think he's part of a larger Middle Eastern terrorist cell, whose members may have already entered the country, federal law-enforcement officials said last night. Ressam was arrested Wednesday night while trying to enter the country from the Port Angeles ferry, which originates in Vancouver. Customs agents found hidden in the spare tire compartment of his rental car a series of bomb-making materials, including two jars of nitroglycerin, 100 pounds of urea, four timing devices using a 9-volt battery connector and a Casio watch, sources said. Nitroglycerin and urea were also used in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Someone had reserved a room in the name of Benni Norris at a Best Western Loyal Motor Inn a few blocks from the Space Needle at Seattle Center -- the site of a large planned millennium celebration. Stunned law-enforcement officials strongly suspect the Space Needle bash was the target and have launched a massive manhunt in the area for possible accomplices. "It's very concerning on the face of it and we're taking it very seriously," Jesse Chester, spokesman for the Seattle office of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, told reporters. "This is the real deal and evidence that we are reaching a critical mass as the millennium approaches in this country and overseas," added Harvey Kushner, a terrorism expert at Long Island University. The arrest comes at a time when the State Department has issued a worldwide alert warning Americans to be careful during the holidays. The alert was issued after a series of arrests in Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt of operatives of Saudi terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, whom U.S. authorities believe is trying to launch a multiple series of coordinated strikes at Americans to coincide with the millennium and the Muslim holy month Ramadan, which ends Jan. 7. Ressam was being held on charges of unlawful entry into the U.S. and giving a false name and using false documents. -- Uncle Bob ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), December 18, 1999 <http://dover.idf.il/IDF/English/updates/08/04/1305.htm> http://dover.idf.il/IDF/English/updates/08/04/1305.htm Fifteen bags containing 375 kg's of urea and Potassium Nitrate were uncovered 13 April 2008 , 14:40 logoFifteen bags containing 375 kg's of urea and Potassium Nitrate were uncovered during a joint IDF and Civil Administration operation on Tuesday in Qalqiliya. Top are beginning to emerge. According to multiple local press reports, the Palembang cell had planned to bomb the well-known Kafe Bedubel in the Chinese section of Bukitinggi, West Sumatra. The plan was scuttled, however, because of the fear of killing [Muslims] and the cell had begun planning operations in Jakarta, where the likelihood of killing foreigners and [non-Muslims] would be greater. Members of the cell were also involved in a 2005 plot to assassinate a Christian pastor, Father Joshua, in Bandung. * * * The investigation uncovered a cache of bombs and weapons, including 20 electronic pipe bombs, 50 38-calibre bullets, 2 cans of black powder, cables, various electronics, timers and a bombmaking manual. Some of the bombs were reportedly set to explode. A cache of chemicals were also discovered, including aluminium powder, pottasium nitrate, pottasium [chlorate], nitrate and urea. Eighteen computers were also seized during the raids, which may provide significant information on the current status of JI. * * * [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
