Iran set to deploy first destroyer for patrols in Persian Gulf

NICOSIA - Iran has completed preparations for the deployment of its first
indigenous naval destroyer.

The Navy said it was ready to launch its first destroyer, Jamaran, over the
next several weeks. Jamaran, commissioned in February 2010, would begin
patrols of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.

"Jamaran destroyer will be deployed in an area 10 degrees north of
international waters in the near future," Iranian Navy commander Rear Adm.
Habibollah Sayari said.

In remarks reported by Iran's state-owned Fars News Agency, Sayari said
Jamaran has a weight displacement of 14,000 tons and equipped with radars as
well as advanced electronic warfare systems. The surface vessel was also
fitted with anti-ship, surface-to-air missiles and torpedoes.

Officials said the Navy has been expanding its presence in the Gulf and Sea
of Oman. They cited Iran's participation in an anti-piracy mission in the
Gulf of Aden, which began in November 2008.

"Dispatching the Ninth Fleet to the Gulf of Aden signifies the Navy's combat
power for staging a powerful presence in international waters," Sayari said.
