Iran proceeding with plans for uranium mining self-sufficiency NICOSIA - Iran has reported advances in uranium exploration and mining. Officials said the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization has overseen a project to accelerate uranium exploration and mining. They said the Teheran regime has deemed this a national priority in an effort to bolster Iran's nuclear program. "The activities have grown several-fold," IAEO director Ali Akbar Salehi said. Officials said Iran, with 5,000 tons of ore, intends to achieve self-sufficiency in uranium mining by 2018. They reported large quantities of uranium ore in Bandar Abbas and Yazid. Bandar Abbas was said to contain a capability of 21 tons of yellowcake, the raw material for uranium enrichment. Yazid was said to have 1.5 million tons of uranium oxide. "More activities are being carried out at the Saghand mine, and we are pursuing both uranium exploration and extraction in the Bandar Abbas mine which is the country's only yellowcake producer and we have good results so far," Salehi said. In remarks reported on Iran's state-owned Mehr news agency on Oct. 19, Salehi, also the nation's vice president, said uranium exploration has become the priority of the nuclear energy program. He said exploration was being conducted in central and southern Iran. "We have divided the country into several regions and in each one we are doing some research," Salehi said. "But most of our exploration activities are being conducted in the central and southern parts of the country."
