China rejects, deflects U.S. complaint on strategic assist to Iran China is continuing to covertly sell nuclear and missile technology to Iran in violation of United Nations sanctions, according to U.S. officials. The issue was raised during a recent visit to China by Robert Einhorn, a senior Obama administration arms control official. China, according to officials, rejected Einhorn's protests over sales by Chinese companies of nuclear and other goods that are barred for sale to Iran under U.N. sanctions imposed on Teheran for its refusal to comply with international controls on its nuclear program. Asked about the possible sanctions violations, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said last week that "China was integral in the process that led to the drafting and passage of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1929." "China has pledged to fully enforce Resolution 1929," he said. "Our special adviser, Bob Einhorn, had multiple meetings with the Chinese, both in New York during the U.N. General Assembly and also in Beijing towards the end of last month. We did provide some information to China on specific concerns about individual Chinese companies, and the Chinese assured us that they will investigate." A CIA report to Congress made public earlier this year said China has been supplying materials and assistance to Iran's ballistic missile program. "Chinese entities -- which include private and state-owned companies and individuals -- continue to engage in WMD-related proliferation activities," the CIA report, covering 2009, stated. Despite implementing new export controls over the past several years, "enforcement continued to fall short," the report said. "Chinese entities continue to supply a variety of missile-related items to multiple customers, including recent exports to Iran and Pakistan," the report said.
