BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber killed at least 26 people Friday night in a cafe
in northern Iraq
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/iraq.html?nav=el> ,
the first major attack here in weeks, Iraqi officials said.

The bombing in Balad Ruz, a village in restive Diyala province, wounded at
least 60 people, police Maj. Ghalib al-Jubouri said.

Jubouri said many of the victims were police officers who were regular
patrons of the establishment.

Balad Ruz is an ethnically mixed village 45 miles northeast of Baghdad.
Surrounding towns are predominantly Sunni, but parts of the village,
including the site of the bombing, are populated mainly by Shiite Kurds.

The attack underscored the fragile security situation in Iraq amid a
deepening political crisis. Iraqi politicians have been wrangling since
March 7 parliamentary elections over who is entitled to form a government.

Major attacks have become less frequent in Iraq this year. But kidnapping
and assassinations remain an everyday threat, with soldiers, police officers
and other government officials the prime targets.
