On February 3, 2011, Shabaab al-Mujahideen released an official communiqué
claiming responsibility for executing a "spy", whom Shabaab alleged had been
assisting the CIA since 2004. The execution of the "spy" took place
publically and was recorded and broadcast on the Shabaab owned al-Kataib TV
channel, which is a new endeavor for its media wing, al-Kataib Media.
According to the statement, Ahmed "Keesi had been working for them since the
year 2004, after his recruitment in Djibouti, as he confessed." Further,
Shabaab boasted, "the execution of Keesi is considered a big hit against the
CIA in Somalia," adding that "the confessions of the spy will be distributed
on the Internet."
