Senior Russian official: Arab leaders preparing for greater unrest

MOSCOW - Arab leaders have assessed increasing unrest in the Middle East in
wake of the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

A senior Russian official reported that Arab leaders were bracing for
revolts in their countries over the next few months. Russian Deputy Foreign
Minister Alexander Sultanov has been touring the Middle East and sounding
out Arab leaders from such countries as Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

"The contacts during our visit showed that at least some regional leaders do
not expect a quick exit from this phase of development in the Middle East,"
Sultanov said. "The leaders of these countries and some others believe the
process will gain momentum."

In a briefing on Feb. 13, Sultanov did not identify those Arab leaders who
were bracing for unrest. Sultanov, regarded as the leading expert on Arab
affairs in the Russian Foreign Ministry, met leaders from Egypt, Jordan and
Syria.

Sultanov's message belied the declarations of calm issued by Arab leaders in
wake of Mubarak's ouster. The leaders insisted that the unrest in Egypt
would not affect their countries.

During his tour, Sultanov relayed a message of support from Russian
President Dmitri Medvedev. The deputy minister said the Kremlin has pledged
to continue assistance to Middle East states as well as play a role in the
resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
