Cable: French infrared detectors systems to China were sold to Iran

A French company sold high-technology infrared systems to China, and Beijing
in turn sold the goods to Iran, according to a State Department cable from
2009.

The cable stated that the U.S. was protesting to France that "Zhejiang Dali
Technology is actively selling its thermal imaging systems to Iranian
defense entities and that the use of high-grade French infrared detectors in
this technology could increase the threat to U.S. and allied forces
operating in the Gulf region."

The cable asked only that the sale be investigated and that France "act to
have Sofradir and Ulis immediately terminate this activity."

A former State Department official said that during the Obama administration
"we've given up harassing the Chinese, we're trying to get the French to
stop selling sensitive systems to Chinese companies because they just turn
around and give them to the Iranians."
