Obama's UN ambassador MIA in face of Mid-East conflicts

. February 26th, 2011 6:40 pm ET

. This weekend the United Nations Security Council continued its
emergency session in order to address the issue of sanctions against the
Libyan government headed by dictator Moamer Khadhafi. In such matters, it is
not uncommon for the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. to take a leadership role
in formulating such a response to the violence and destruction in a country
in bloody turmoil.

However, as time goes by, more and more Americans are realizing that a
second-stringer is in charge -- at least at the United Nations building in
New York City, a/k/a The Beast on the East River (the title of Nathan
Tabor's provocative book).

On Saturday, during reports about Middle East unrest not only in Libya but
also in Bahrain and other Arab nations, America's top U.N. representative
was as silent as she was absent.

Many observers were shocked to discover that the U.S. Ambassador to the
U.N., Ms. Susan Rice, was 8,000 miles away from New York's U.N.
headquarters. Amb. Rice is visiting South Africa this weekend discussing
issues close to the heart of her President: Carbon emissions and green jobs
in the Third World.

One can only wonder if she is being briefed on the troubled Middle East.

For example, a U.S. intelligence source told the Law Enforcement Examiner
that armed African mercenaries in Libyan neighborhoods are firing on anyone
they see in the streets of Tripoli.

"The mercenaries are reportedly being supported by machine gun-mounted,
rocket-firing helicopters. Reports -- many of them unsubstantiated --
describe mercenaries butchering, raping and killing Libyan men, women and
children and the Libyan soldiers fear interfering with the activities of
Khadhafi's hired guns. Libya's hired guns were recruited from Chad, Niger,
and the Sudan and are considered battle-hardened and ruthless," said the
source.

According to the Huffington Post -- hardly a right-wing, Obama-hating
publication -- missing the Security Council meeting on the Libyan revolution
was not Rice's first absence from high profile U.N. business. Rice was
absent when the U.N. held an emergency Security Council meeting on Israel's
raid of a ship headed to Gaza and when Iran was elected to the U.N. Women's
Commission. Rice also failed to speak out when Libya was elected to the U.N.
Human Rights Council in May 2010.

In a surprising development reported by Fox News Channel's Jennifer Griffin,
Libya's deputy ambassador to the United Nations called for Khadhafi to
resign immediately. Did Rice know this? Why didn't Rice immediately meet
with Libya's U.N. representative?

Libyan Ambassador Dabbashi accused Khadhafi of "genocide" and told members
of the U.N. press corp that Khadhafi should be tried as a war criminal.

"He has to leave as soon as possible. He has to stop killing the Libyan
people," Dabbashi told news reporters at the United Nations. What was the
United States response to such a major development?

"Reportedly, Ambassador Rice was enjoying a formal "tea" with politicians
and environmentalists in South Africa, who see the so-called Green movement
as a means to taking more money from Americans and giving it to depots and
thugs such as... well, present and future Moamer Khadhafis," quipped
political strategist Mike Baker.
