Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces:  Helmand,
Kandahar, Baghlan, Zabul, Khost, Wardak, Nangarhar and Logar.

Taliban safe havens have been cleared out in two separate provinces, along
with homemade bombs and weapons caches including RPG's, launchers, boosters,
pressure plates, black powder, anti-personnel mines and more. 

Coalition forces rounded up a variety of Haqqani leaders and Taliban
leaders.   Multiple insurgents were killed as well as a few were taken
alive.

 

In other International Security Assistance Force Joint (ISAF) Command
Operational News throughout Afghanistan: 

Helmand Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force targeted an insurgent leader
during an operation in Nad 'Ali district, Helmand province, yesterday.

Several insurgents were killed and numerous suspected insurgents were
detained during the operation.

The insurgents were killed when they attempted to ambush the combined force
while they were searching buildings inside a compound associated with the
target. The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and
further questioning.

The target of the operation leads a suicide attack network that targets
Afghan and coalition forces in Helmand province.

Kandahar Province

In Arghandab district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition
force patrol discovered a weapons cache, today. The cache consisted of 52
rocket-propelled grenades, one RPG launcher, 10 RPG boosters, one radio and
battery, one large weapon mount and one multi-switch board.

Baghlan Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several Taliban
insurgents and detained numerous suspected insurgents during a clearing
operation in Dahanah-ye Ghori district, Baghlan province, yesterday.

The operation was conducted to clear a suspected Taliban safe haven in Ghor
Chesma village, which is associated with facilitation activities and cache
sites. This area is historically associated with the Taliban district chief
in Doshi district.

The security force targeted the area after intelligence sources and tips
from citizens indicated insurgent activity in the area.

During the initial stages of the operation, the force identified and
detained two Taliban fighters. At a nearby location, the force was engaged
by multiple armed insurgents. One insurgent was killed as the force returned
fire. The force then observed more insurgents attempting offensive
maneuvers. A fire fight ensued as the armed insurgents attacked the force,
resulting in several insurgents being killed.

Continuing the mission, the force cleared several more compounds in the
area. Based on interviews with residents, the force identified and detained
numerous suspected insurgents for further questioning. Initial reports
indicate no civilians were hurt in the operation.

Zabul Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several individuals
with suspected ties to insurgent activity while searching for a Taliban
leader in Shah Joy district, Zabul province, yesterday. The leader directs
fighters and facilitators in the district, and coordinates insurgent attacks
against Afghan and coalition forces. 

Multiple reports of Taliban activity in the area led the security force to
target two compounds in the district. At the initial compound, the force
commenced their search by isolating the area and calling for all occupants
to exit the buildings. The force searched the area and detained one
suspected insurgent for further questioning.

At a nearby location, the force searched another compound and based on
information from residents the force was able to detain two additional
suspected insurgents. There were no shots fired and the force ensured the
safety of the women and children while conducting both searches.

Khost Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected
insurgents while searching for a Haqqani facilitator in Sabari district,
Khost province, yesterday. The facilitator is involved in the acquisition,
movement employment and production of weapons and explosives for Haqqani
leaders. He also has conducted attacks against coalition forces. 

Intelligence tips led the security force to a compound in the district after
reports of insurgent activity in the area. After securing the safety of the
women and children, the force conducted interviews with residents. Several
individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency were detained for
further questioning. While searching the area the force discovered multiple
small arms weapons and chest racks. There were no shots fired during the
operation.

Also...

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network
facilitator during a security operation in Sabari district, yesterday. The
facilitator assisted the terrorist network with the movement of supplies to
Haqqani insurgents, and assisted in attacks against Afghan and coalition
forces in the district.

The combined security force targeted the facilitators suspected compound
based on numerous intelligence reports of insurgent activity in the area.
The force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit the
buildings peacefully. All occupants complied with the request, allowing the
force to ensure the safety of the women and children. After clearing the
compound, the force conducted interviews with the compound's occupants. As a
result of the interviews, the insurgent facilitator was identified and
detained. One suspected insurgent was also detained for further questioning
about Haqqani activities in the area.

Wardak Province

In Nerkh district, Wardak province, a coalition force patrol discovered a
weapons cache today. The cache consisted of one grenade, one spool of
detonation cord, 31 pounds (14 kilograms) of TNT, five RPGs, three full
AK-47 magazines, 101 pounds (46 kgs) of black powder, seven anti-personnel
mines, nine rockets and multiple metal discs used for pressure plates.

The weapons will be or have been destroyed by the security forces.

Also...

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected
insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation
in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, yesterday. The leader facilitates
weapons and equipment for area insurgents, and coordinates attacks against
Afghan and coalition forces. He also coordinates mine emplacements within
Musa Khel village.

Multiple intelligence reports led the force to search a compound in the
district in search of the leader. The force cleared and searched multiple
buildings without shots fired while maintaining the safety of the civilians.
Residents were questioned about the facilitator's location before several
individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency were detained for
further questioning.

Nangarhar Province

An Afghan and coalition security force capture a Taliban leader and several
suspected insurgents during a security operation in Chaparhar district,
yesterday. The leader was involved in attack planning, facilitation and
financing.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the security force searched for the
leader at a compound in Chaparhar. The operation commenced as the force
isolated the area and had all occupants exit the buildings. The force
searched the area and then conducted interviews with residents. Based on the
information provided by the residents, the force identified and detained the
insurgent leader. The force also apprehended several additional individuals
with suspected ties to insurgency. Throughout the search, the force ensured
the safety of the women and children.

Logar Province

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected
insurgents during a clearing operation in Pul-e 'Alam district, Logar
province, yesterday. The operation was conducted to clear a suspected
Taliban safe haven in Babus village known as a homemade bomb manufacturing
center and insurgent staging area for attacks against coalition forces. This
area has been associated with a Taliban leader who commands and controls
insurgent operations in northern Logar.

The security force searched and cleared several locations during the
operation. During the search, the force discovered significant bomb making
material, including C4, ammonium nitrate, refined nitrate, detonation cord,
sulphuric acid, shrapnel, tripwires and pressure plate components. They
questioned residents about insurgent activity and associations in the area.
Based on the information provided by residents, the force detained two
suspect insurgents for further questioning. Throughout the operation, the
force ensured the safety of the women and children, and they concluded the
operation without firing a shot.
