U.S. Romania Reach Agreement On Missile Interceptor Base

The United States and Romania have announced plans to install missile
interceptors as part of a new defense shield for Europe.

Romanian President Traian Basescu made the announcement Tuesday after
meeting with U.S. Under Secretary of State Ellen Tauscher. The interceptors
will be deployed at the former airbase at Deveselu, near the Bulgarian
border.

An average of 200 American troops will be stationed at the base, which Mr.
Basescu says will provide Romania with "the highest level of security." The
base is expected to be operational by 2015.

Mr. Basescu also agreed to allow U.S. troops and military equipment bound
for Iraq and Afghanistan to transit through a Romanian airbase and harbor
near the Black Sea.

Romania is a close ally of the United States and currently has over 1,700
troops deployed in Afghanistan.
