Iran's said to have warheads designed by Ukraine with China assist

WASHINGTON - Iran was said to have received at least two nuclear warheads.

The Iranian opposition asserted that Iran has begun producing nuclear
warheads for intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The opposition said the
warheads were being developed in cooperation with such allies of Teheran as
China, Pakistan and Ukraine.

The Green Experts of Iran reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps received the warheads for missiles that could travel 3,200 kilometers.
The opposition group said the warheads were the first manufactured in Iran
and have been deployed by IRGC in 2011.

Ukraine was said to have designed the warheads, the opposition said. China
and Pakistan were said to have provided engineering, machinery and
technology.

Green Experts said the Iranian Defense Ministry oversaw the project. The
group said the ministry helped in interface and integration.

The opposition report has not been confirmed by the United States. But over
the last year, the administration of President Barack Obama has acknowledged
that Iran was receiving foreign technology, particularly from China and
North Korea, for the production of nuclear missiles.

Green Experts identified several Iranian universities as part of the nuclear
weapons program. The opposition cited Amir Kabir University and Shaheed
Beheshti University.

At this point, the warheads were not said to contain a nuclear weapon. Green
Experts said the installation of a nuclear payload was expected in 2012.

Reza Kahlili, a former senior IRGC officer who defected to the United
States, said the Green Experts report was credible. Kahlili who has
published a book about his life as a CIA agent in Iran, said IRGC has a
capacity to produce missiles with a range of 3,200 kilometers.

"In the past, the Guards encountered problems with the design of a warhead
with a reentry vehicle that could successfully carry a nuclear payload,"
Kahlili said in an analysis. "They tried for years using the North Korean No
Dong warhead design, with little success. But it now appears that with the
collaboration with China, Pakistan and the Ukraine, they have overcome those
difficulties and are now in possession of the warheads. They are now ready
to arm them with nuclear payloads."
