This technique has been used as a way for clients to provide a label to the service provider that it can persist with the link. This allows the service provider to display a user friendly textual label for the link instead of a "raw" URL. One drawback of this technique is that the label stored in the service provider can get of synch with the external resource referenced by the link, e.g. if the resource is renamed. The use of reification has also recently under some scrutiny in OSLC Core discussions [2]. I think that our scenarios will require displaying links in UIs, and in my opinion UI Preview provides a better way to resolve the link label in a just-in-time fashion. So I would lean towards making support for compact XML media type a SHOULD requirement.
