I would certainly prefer to see the choice held open until the Marketplace,
so the butterfly option was chosen along with all the other sessions. One or
two large rooms, with materials for artwork or other activities, maybe some
quiet space if some wanted to study. These things can be made available
without
having a head count in advance--it just is different from the way the teachers
usually work. My guess is that you would get some people wandering between
the discussion sessions and the butterfly rooms. And just by being in the
same
space and taking part in the opening, they would have some sense of
participation.

I have no doubt that what you are proposing would work in a school
situation -- as indeed we know from experience that it can and does. I
guess I had to chuckle, however, because what you predict ("My guess is
that you would get some people wandering between
the discussion sessions and the butterfly rooms.") is exactly what I find
to be true in any Open Space I have ever been a part of. All of which says
to me that the difference between an OS in schools or anywhere else is just
about zero. In a business environment we run into the same sorts of issues
regarding the freedom to come or go -- no matter how hard we may work with
the sponsors in terms of "real invitation." The learning for me would be
that folks are folks, people are people -- even when they happen to be in
school. Granted the teachers may feel (think they feel, feel they ought to
feel) that they are in charge and have everything under control. But
anybody with the eyes to see understands that is a delusion at best. Having
spent no small amount of time in "Detention Rooms" while in school due to
various crimes on my part -- I can say that my imprisonment was largely
superficial. Truth to tell I felt a real increase of freedom if only
because there was nobody present telling me what to think. Odd.
