Joelle-- This requires me to divulge my age, but it was at least 35
years ago that the Earth Day custom was begun. I remember, because I
was 30 a few weeks later and decided to have a "Dirty 30 Earth Day"
Birthday Party. Best --BJ

Michael--
Earth Day is April 22, a day to encourage and celebrate wise
stewardship of the earth and our natural resources. In Seattle today
(the nearest Saturday), 400 people came out to pick up litter, clean
up grafitti, maintain plantings and paint in a four-square-block
area. In the city of Olympia, a few miles from where I live, they
have an annual parade--the Procession of the Species--honoring animals
and plants with costumed marchers and music. Many colleges have guest
speakers and seminars about environmental issues. It's a custom that
began about 20 years ago, I believe.
