Hege, You've already gotten many wonderful responses to your questions! I offer one item that might be helpful to you or even helpful to share with the managers.
It is a 16 minute video of an Open Space at a telephone company: http://vimeo.com/25251316 It contains interviews of people before, throughout and after an OS event. Harrison provides an explanation of Open Space principles woven throughout the video. I thought of the video because most of the participants were network technicians -- the people who climb telephone poles. (Before the wires all went underground.) They may not be ship builders, but they are blue collar workers. I remember toward the end of this 2 1/2 day event, one of the network technicians speaking about how moving it was for him to run a breakout session. It was the first time he had ever been entrusted to do something like that. Enjoy!
