Just to be clear and precise. Potlatches are still held and are an essential contemporary aspect of the governance system of North west Pacific coast indigenous nations. They were banned from the 1920s to the 1950s (which didn't really stop them going away, passion and responsibility and all that) but I can tell you they are very much alive today.
