This is based on the notion of if there is an open space or a “free space” then sooner rather than later people start to structure it. OS seems to hold the space open by having the rule and laws which actually regulate the participatory process. I’ve been reading Deleuze and Guattari on smooth ness and striation of space.. A couple of years ago we opened space with 500 primary school children and at first it was chaotic, but as the day progressed the children learned the laws etc and the movement from session to market place to newswall etc and this is similar to agile techniques that structure work practices but enable collaboration in spaces created by the iterative pattern of work , by its underpinning philosophy and through its ceremonies. I wrote a PhD on open space using some unusual methodologies including Organic Inquiry (feminist heuristic phenomenology) and Indigenous Science. I've also been involved in some of the conversations about researching Open Space over the years.
