That's a nice idea. Just 2 notes:
1. using such colored relief could basically replace contour lines (which 
are a separate datafile now), as you now have colors to see layers of same 
altitute. Depends omn how granular those colors are.
2. the colours could not be this saturated as it would interfere with 
objects drawn from the map (e.g. green forests). So maybe much lighter 
color range would work.
