My personal experimenting with various colour tinting ( like the tinting of altitude or slopes ) has lead to conclusion the current grey hillshading is the only one I personally accept.

Depends omn how granular those colors are. 2. the colours could not be this saturated as it would interfere with objects drawn from the map (e.g. green forests). So maybe much lighter color range would work.
