I was driving with OSMAnd guidance yesterday, and had to get on New York State Route 157A.
OSMAnd announced, "In two-tenths of a mile, turn right on New York one hundred fifty-seven amperes." The same happened later in the day on 85A and New York doesn't number its highways in units of electrical current. I suspect that few jurisdictions do. I'm realizing belatedly that I've heard other units in the past, and either not been able to make sense of the word or thought it was something else. US Route 9W is announced as "nine watts" (I had misheard "9 West" which is incorrect but understandable), 9J as "nine joules" (I thought it might have been "nine juliet" as in the radio alphabet), and 9N as "nine newtons". I'm half tempted to drive over to Rotterdam Junction to see how it would announce 5S - "five siemens", I suspect. The other navigation program, the one from the enormous advertising agency that got its start offering an internet search engine, used to have an identical gaffe but corrected it several years ago. Platform is Samsung Galaxy S7, Android Nougat, if it matters. Oh, another question: Is there a way to tag data with a pronunciation in OSM? OSMAnd is predictably pretty bad at pronouncing some of the local obscure names. "Schoharie" (sko-HAIR-ee), "Valatie" (vuh-LAY-shuh), Schenectady (skuh-NECK-tuh-dee) and anything local with "Vly" in the name (that's an actual word, not an abbreviation of Valley) are among the ones that get pretty butchered. We also love mispronouncing the names of towns named for foreign and words: "Berlin", "Cairo", "Corinth", "Edinburg", and "Monticello" are all pronounced other than the way you'd expect. I'm certainly willing to help OSMand with pronouncing the ones I know about, and I'm willing even to enter them in IPA if that's what it takes. Third question: Is there a way to tell from OSMand what version of OSM data it's using? I'm still having my issue with STOP signs apparently being announced in the wrong direction (literally the wrong direction - they're consistently not announced from the correct one), and I'd like to make sure that my view of the OSM data matches OSMand's view before diving in to try to analyze it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Osmand" group.
