That means, if there is among Osm road data a substring e.g "85A", Osmand
passes it to the system TTS, supposing it will be pronounced as expected.

Some TTS engines may pretend they know the context better and pronounce the
ending letters as names of physical units, like if it was a technical text.

How the particular navigation pronounces it depends on what system TTS
engine is set to be used on the Android level, and if the application
installs a/o uses any on its own.

The speech synthesis API on Android (don't know about other platforms)
allows SSML as well as plain text. The <phoneme> element will allow for
giving the pronunciation of unusual names (and would require tagging them
in OSM with pronunciation, but I'd surely do that for the places that I'm
tiring of hearing mispronounced!). I don't think there's an accepted
tagging scheme for this - the proposal at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Phonetics appears to
be moribund. But I'd love to be able to put in name:en:IPA=/vəˈleɪ.ʃə/ or
name:en:XSAMPA=/v@"leIS@/ for 'Valatie'. I'm tired of hearing /ˈvæ.ləˌtiː/,
even though that's a reasonable guess to make if you don't live around here.

The <say-as> would allow proper speaking of highway references: <say-as
interpret-as="cardinal">85</say-as>
<say-as><interpret-as="characters">A</say-as> would render as "eighty-five
A" not "eighty-five amperes".

I think that most speech synthesis engines must have something like this
available, because otherwise, correct pronunciation of proper names would
be well-nigh impossible.
