You can always temporarily switch the airplane mode off. It can be very quick.
Aside of saving the battery, the mind may deserve a vacation away from
incoming calls.
One can usually manage at the provider the sms notification service about
missed calls.

Thanks Bart. Putting the phone into aeroplane mode is also supposed to be
very helpful for battery life, but you obviously then can't make calls etc.

This is just anecdotal, but it seems to me that using a phone GPS drains
the battery, regardless of the app I sometimes put the phone into
power-save mode. OsmAnd seems to work, but GPX recording is less
precise--fewer samples taken. That, at least, on a Nexus 5X. (Like you, I
also have an external battery. I mostly use it on long hikes and
backpacks.)

I'm planning to follow some ~1000km GPX tracks in August. Does anyone
have experience using OsmAnd for tracks of that length? Are there known
issues like consuming more battery or being slow etc?
Also, are there any OsmAnd tricks for conserving battery power? Obviously
I can turn off the screen and turn down its brightness when on (as well as
turning off wifi, bluetooth, etc). Would disabling OsmAnd voice prompts be
much of a saving? I'm planning to just display the GPX track on the map,
and not use turn-by-turn guidance. I really like OsmAnd, but it feels like
it consumes a lot of battery (maybe that's just my imagination, though). I
have a dynamo and will also have an external battery, but would like to
minimize what OsmAnd uses.
Thanks!
