I recently discovered a way to (in osmand) display contours clearly at low magnification. Select the Osmand style map, then go to Configure map/Contours and increase width and density. The disadvantage is that greater detail is displayed and therefore needs a recent model phone with a decent processor otherwise it is just too slow.
