If you are truly following a GPX imported from an outside source, routing would be based on the GPX, not the underlying map. And the "turn-by-turn" directions would show every twist of the route, rather than every pertinent intersection. Alternatively, you might import the GPX for reference only, then create a route to the destination. That approach would follow the map, give true turn-by-turn directions, but might result in a detour due, typically, to flaws in the mapping data.
Perhaps your group tried both approaches.
