In the US, marking a place signed "no trespassing" as "permissive" is
outright crazy.

Indeed, if one has permission, then the no trepassing sign doesn't apply
to them.

But this is *exactly* the definition of access=private.

True, but one also needs to be careful not to mark things that are
actually private as something else because of a dislike of private.
That is putting intentionally bad data into OSM.
