method 1: didnt work
method 2: yes, I could do and save a gpx track, to be used later.

You know, I was used to check many tracks this way in older versions,
without being "attached" to my present location, and that independency
allowed me to assess alternatives, or to simply plan a day by learning
beforehand the total time to do several tracks. I still wonder what changed
in newer versions, and wonder if it's a feature or a bug.
