There isn't a whole lot to the ossec-maild. Your best bet is to route the email through the local machine's smtp daemon. On my setup maild is configured to send mail through 127.0.0.1 (<smtp_server>127.0.0.1</smtp_server>), and that daemon is configured to route my mail correctly.
