Microsoft isn't even his day job any more (and I think its
been obvious that he hasn't really been interested in it for quite a
while).
His day job is as the head of the largest charitable
foundation in the world, that among other things:
- has a larger international health aid budget than the World Health
Organisation
- has given a billion dollars for scholarships to USminority students
- is making major contributions to eliminating malaria and polio
Sure, Bill has done a lot of evil in his time, and is a
monopolistic rapacious business man, whol sold the world an awful lot
of crappy software.
I actually think Bill leaving his position at Microsoft and
taking on the Gates Foundation role was more than symbolic.
After all, if you are incredibly rich, have many people
convinced you are a genius, seemingly prettily happily married, but
many people hate you and distrust you --- is it that surprising that
you'll focus on trying to convince people that you are a good guy, by
setting out to do good things?
Also, frankly - running Microsoft has probably gotten pretty
dull, and pretty dispiriting, given that practically everything they
have done in the last five years or so has been pretty disappointing.
I think Bill is happy not to have it be his problem any more.
        Cheers
                David
