Just what are our strategic goals in Afghanistan? Is it making the pipeline safe?

What pipeline?

This one? <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Afghanistan_Pipeline>

I don't want to confuse the common dreams folks with, ah, reality or anything but it's rather hard to make a non-existent pipeline safe and would be bad business to try and build one in the middle of a war.

I mean, what would possess a company to spend the money to build an obvious "target" or a bank to lend them the money to do so in the middle of a world wide recession. Even more so, why would a US company, under threat of having the tax laws changed, by the Obama administration, for over-seas investments even bother?

If you assume that businesses are greedy self serving bastards that manipulate the political world for their own gain, this is not a profitable investment at the moment. Way too many risks and the one thing you can be sure of is that if there is no money to be made then it's not going to happen.

Heck, that region just might nuke itself into oblivion soon. That would really put a damper on investments.

IMHO, It's run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. In other words it's an EX pipeline.
