We have frequent question on the mailing list regarding this issue. Last
time someone asked I decided to write a section in the Software Guide to
explain how to check your gdal and what to do. You can read it in the

This issue is fixed in the gdal package on more and more distribution:
- in osgeo4w on Windows
- on Macports
- on Debian testing and Ubuntu 14.04. For other Ubuntu there is a
functional gdal package in the ubuntugis-uunstable repository
- don't have a complete list but most of other linux distrib must
integrate a functional gdal package in a repo
If for some reasons you can't find a functional gdal package you can
still compile you're own gdal following the instruction in the FAQ.
