I have run a variety of the learning classification algorithms without changing the DEM parameters or specifying a DEM input. If you're using the Learning algorithms from OTB Monteverdi (6.2.0) or through QGIS (2.18.5), make sure you unselect the "On edge pixel inclusion" or you will likely get an error.
