Hello everyone,

I also work in a Hospital that uses OT's on every floor from ICU, cardiac, med/surg, ortho, oncology, ECF (Extended Care Facility) or sub-acute rehab to acute rehab (where the patients get 3 hrs of rehab a day) ( 1 1/2 hr of OT and 1 1/2 hr of  PT). Also some patients receive SLP and RT (recreational therapy).

I work mostly with a lot of THA's, TKA's, CVA's, TBI,  SCI, but also with RA, Parkinson, Multiple Sclerosis, cardiac, COPD patients. Additionally and just recently,  we added adult and pediatric outpatient OT and PT rehab care.

I feel that COTA's and OTR's have an important role when it comes to retraining these patients in their ADL's. Many times OT/PT co-treat together, especially when we have to deal with a difficult patient. OT's and PT's have a good relationship and respect each other role.

To the person that was asking about giving sponge baths in the pm v/s am, I have to say that most of my patients rather have a sponge bath or shower in the am v/s pm. I feel that it's a good way to start the day, especially in the acute rehab where the patients are encouraged to get dressed in regular clothes and make that part of their treatment. It works out good since most of the patients have goals that include bathing, dressing, hygiene/grooming, bathtub/shower transfers. In the pm we focus on other goals like dynamic standing act. (such as kitchen, laundry act.), or reaching hi/low act. (to address balance).

Thank you,

Maria Humphrey, COTA
