I just had a patient two weeks ago who had a sudden onset of hearing loss. She had been hard of hearing prior, but could hear enough to function. When I had her as a patient in the hospital she couldn't hear a thing. She had bleeding in her ear, that had built up, causing hearing loss. They cleaned out her ear and she could hear better. I have had other patients with wax build up that caused a hearing loss, and once it was removed hearing was restored. Talk to the nurses or doctor to see if this has been ruled out. Is this person also having balance or vestibular problems? Has this person had exposure to loud noise? "Sudden hearing loss" sounds like a symptom, not a diagnosis. What other diseases does this individual have? Medications can also sometimes impact on hearing.
You may want to get a speech therapist involved also, to help establish alternative methods of communication.
