I recently raised a question about The Fund to Promote Awareness of OT. I had never heard of this organization and was asking OTnow members for information. List member, J. Lordan, gave information about The Fund and a survey that The Funded had commissioned. She also provided me the phone number of The Fund's director, Nancy Green.
Ms. Green was kind enough to send me a copy of the preliminary report of the survey entitled: "Forging Connections: A National Public Awareness Survey of Occupational Therapy's Role in Helping Independent-Living Older Adults". The survey was conducted by the Gallup Organization. The results of the survey, while disappointing, are for the most part what might be expected. However, one result of the survey is particularly disappointing and may speak volumes about how our profession is perceived. The writers of the preliminary report conclude that OT is perceived in a fashion which is highly similar to home health aides and nursing assistants! If this information is correct, then The Fund and ALL of us have lots of work to do in promoting OT. Ms. Green is very interested in List member's comments, not only about the survey but about The Fund. I will forward all appropriate remarks about this topic to her e-mail address. So, if you want a voice, this is a good time to express your opinion and experience about OT awareness.
