Re using the COPM in palliative situations as Mary suggested. One of my
most satisfying experiences was using it with a young father who had
terminal cancer. His relationship with his children had been based on
very physical interaction. The COPM questions and process helped him,
first to become aware of and articulate this, then to analyse what
meaning those activities had had for all of them and finally to find
replacement activities for each of the kids which let them know that
their father valued them and wanted to be with them.
Incidentally there were several nurses and a doctor who 'got' what OT is
all about. Except for one nurse, who already knew, they saw no reason
for an OT referral. She got me in for 'comfort measures'.
